The fan works to cool your motor off. If the fan is excessively loud then that means your motor is overheating. Check the coolant fluid level and fill if needed. Make sure it's not leaking.

He didn't say it was excessively loud...? Your fan stays on if it is over the 195F mark, 195 is usually the normal range for temperature, it will stay on until the car cools down. 195 on your cluster will be in the middle or slightly over the middle NOT MUCH MORE then that. If your close to that red zone then you either:
1. blew a head gasket
2. low on coolant
3. Thermostat isn't working
4. Clogged Radiator

theres more ways then those but those are most common

My engine fan was doing the same thing. It kept coming on at random times, even when the car had been parked and turned off for hours. I would constantly come out to a dead battery. I took it to an electrical shop that did a fuse search and found a draw with #5. #5 controls: turn signals, hazard lights, A/T control unit, Automatic seat belt control unit and the PGM-FI ECU. The mechanics moved everything from the #5 fuse from "automatic" to "accessory." This way, the fan does not come on automatically. The downside is that you have to have the key turned in order to operate the other components like seat belts, hazards.
