What the heck does an Oil Catch Can do?

I've seen a dozen cars with an oil catch can as a modification and i'm sitting here wondering, What the heck does an Oil Catch Can do? I heard it helps "clean" or "purify" the oil? I dunno, anyone know anything about them and can chime in on the subject?

It catches the oil vapors that can be sucked in the intake from the vacuum line coming from the valve cover

It just keeps the oil from going through and gunking up my compressor housing, throttle body, intake manifold....etc and then collecting in the intercooler

while we are talking about turbos, how do you get vacuum with a turbocharged car (in higher rpm)? and i have seen cars that are producing positive pressure at idle.

I <3 2.4l's
i have one..you wouldnt belive what would get into the TB, FMIC etc..as kyle noted.

I just got a Greddy Oil catch tank...about to relocate the battery to the trunk and mount the catch can in the battery's spot. :)

You can get hell of vacuum from the intake pipe before the turbo. You wouldn't source a vacuum line to from a pressurized charge pipe

Oh okay, thanks for the clarification. Both you guys have turbo cars, do they work on N/A vehicles also?

Yes, they will keep your intake pipe, throttle body and intake manifold cleaner. Although N/A cars don't have as much problem with it since they don't have the suction from the turbo pulling from the valvecover. The vacuum is still there, just not as drastic

Cool..... That's nice to know. I had a CEL a while ago because my intake pipe and TB was coated in some black stuff. I assume that's the stuff the catch-can "catches"? In a while I'll check my system again to see how fast it builds up....

Yes, that was probably just build up from oil vapor. The catch can will help keep that from happening
