please don"t delete my thread....
Anyways. I have 96 Integra LS with 170,000 miles (car WASN'T driven hard). My car burns oil, alot of oil, about 1qt every 200 miles. BTW, did smog test , smoke passed, only timing failed
I replaced PCV valve and it stopped for a week, it burns oil again. So I'm considering bad piston rings or bad valve seal stems......PLEASE TELL me which version is more possible if :
-smoke is white,
-did compression test - 140, 145, 135, 160 but...
-loosing coolant, car overheats even on cold days after 10miles of driving,
-COOLANT smells like OIL,
-rear bumper is covered with lil carbon and oil
-pulled out spark plugs- were white, grayish
-hot air from vents smells lil bit like oil
Please help me, should I replace valve seals and a head gasket or just whole engine (can find one for $600)?????

White smoke is usually coolant burning. Some of the compression defiencies could be the result of a bad headgasket. That would also explain your coolant smelling like oil.

Sounds like a headgasket issue. Try doing a leakdown test to pinpoint where the compression loss is going.

But burning oil usually points toward bad rings or valve seals. The leakdown test should answer most of your questions

another way to tell if oil and coolant are mixing is by your dip sticl. Pull it out and look at it. If it looks like a milk shake..time for a head gasket..but do what Kyle told you to as well

probably the headgasket. a leakdown test will tell you a lot more than a compression test. however usually coolant / oil mixing is the headgasket. plus you are loosing oil like crazy too. have you checked your coolant levels? ever ran hot? just because there is antifreeze in the overflow bottle doesn't mean that its in the engine. my overflow bottle was full one time but when I opened up the rad it was empty.

Thanks for all the help. Just one question....will bad headgasket cause that big oil loose?????
Just don"t know what to do....I have money to buy a new engine but if replacing a headgasket could fix it....

No, I don't work at Autozone.
Last night picked up a 98 LS motor with 90K miles for $400, good deal. Anyways, thanks guys for all the help...

why did you buy a new motor, why did you just pull the head and find out what the problem is....

could have saved alot of money

he could rebuild the one thats leaking into a stronger motor and drop it back in w/o losing a whole lot of down time.

Hey everybody. Thanks for clearing this problem up. I have a 1996 special edition and I go through about 1-qt of oil or more a week also. I just changed the oil and filter and after running for a while, the dipstick shows a lighter more "milkshaky" oil rather than normal dark... The teg also puts out a pretty decent amount of white smoke.

So I'm pretty sure its the head-gasket after reading everything. But if its something different let me know.

Thanks
