Tire Rubbing

My first post! =)

I've seen some threads about tire rubbing but I haven't found one that solves fully my problems.

I have a 95 teg LS 4-door and I just got 17" rims on it. For one, it raised my car quite a bit so I was thinking of lowering it. but I've been noticing a lot of rubbing on the inner lining of my fenders. I tried to fix the problem by getting strut bars and they do the job when cornering but when i go over bumps and stuff it still rubs.

Do you think I should change my stock suspension and lower it? If so what would be a nice set up for mostly DD but some aggressive driving? Should I take out the lining of my fender?

Thanx, any help is appreciated

1) What tire size are you using with the rims? It sounds like your tire size is too large for a 17" wheel, hence the rubbing. You shouldn't be rubbing AT ALL at stock height. To correctly plus size your tires, you should be running a 205/40/17. From what your describing I'm guessing either your sidewall is too big or your tires are too wide.

2) Strut bars are not going to do anything to effect rubbing. Rubbing occurs from oversized tires and/or ride height of the car.

3) Change your suspension....yes and no. Yes, you should lower the car so it no longer looks like a 4x4 with larger wheels on it. No, you shouldn't lower it until you get correct sized tires on the car and use a good, slight drop setup. Your not going to be able to dump the car very far with large, 17" wheels. Probably should look into a 1 or 1.5 inch setup. You should look into a set of H&R springs and upgrade them with a better shock of your choice (Tokico's are a pretty popular choice with H&R's).

4) DO NOT take out your fender lining. There is no point...your not rubbing on the lining, your rubbing against the fender itself. The metal of the fender tucks into the wheel well for the fender liner to bolt onto it. You have the option of "rolling" your fenders. Basically you want to push back the metal part of the fender all the way around where the lining bolts onto it.

You can do this with a baseball bat planted firmly against your tire. You MUST use perfect pressure or you can risk warping the fender, harming your baseball bat, or ruining your tire.

Please reply with your tire size though, that should take care of the question itself though.

wait he said that the strut bar corrected the problem on a flat surface...wouldnt that mean the frame is warped? or something on the strut tower atleast.

My tire is Nexen radials with 215/40/17 size.

I guess my tires a lil big from the size you were saying nighthawk. I bought these rims and tires from a guy and the tires came with the rims so it was a sweet deal. He also had these wheels on his integra but idk if he had the same problem.

and samurai_blue, I said that the strut bar helped when I was cornering but it didn't help when i was going over bumps on the street. I end up bouncing and that's when the rubbing occurs. My driver side fender is a bit bent in from a douche who ran into my car in a parking lot and when I got back I just saw it but it rubs on both sides so I don't think that's the major problem.

yeah i think the best rout would be to do tires. but what seems odd to me is the strut bar helps durring corners. there shouldnt be that much flex in the frame durring daily driving. amd speed bumps could be tires and shocks. try new tires and tell us how it goes

Yea, you should try to sell the tires you have and scoop up a set that are 205 width. Your going to chew away the outside of the tire where the sidewall connects to the tread if you keep driving with them.

You should also have your struts checked out. If your at stock ride height and your rubbing going over bumps, it sounds like your struts are bottoming out (meaning you need a new set). This could be a good time to invest in a nicer set of struts as well.

Ok, so those of you that have helped me or looked thru this thread for my problem, I went with Tokico Illumina series adjustable gas shocks with H&R OE Sport Springs. Would this be a good set up? I know NightHawk told me to lower 1-1.5 inch. and the springs only lower .5-.75 inch. but i noticed that when the car is full, the weight brings down the car. Should I still worry bout that? or would the new suspension compensate for that?

Wait... What?
it depends how much does the car go down... the aftermarket suspension should be stiffer than the factory set up but still...

no i didn't bend them in. I guess part of the problem was the front part of my driver side fender and bumper was dented in cuz some d bag ran into me in the parking lot while it was parked. but anywayz I fixed that and it has more clearance but it still rubs just a tad. but I still don't know if this set up will be good enough for big wheels.
