do you drive a fast car?
is it true if i get aftermarket parts (say all i got is intake and exaust) i wont pass emissions and i have to take alll off my parts off and return to stock to pass?
Aftermarket parts = failed emissions?

depends...if your car is a 94-95 then they hook it up to the muffler to see the smog results. Usually if your 96-01 then all they do is plug into the OBD2 port and check to see if your throwing any codes...if your not, then your good

where are you from? if you want a smog legal ride and you are in ca. check this website out. arb.ca.gov they will tell you if the parts are smog lega. (even if you arent in ca, all parts listed are CARB legal) oh...its on the left hand side and it says "after market parts" search by part type

Also, if your car is OBDII and you want to boost and convert to OBDI thats a no no. Its gotta stay OBDII.
Like mentioned before, it all depends on what state you're from. Your best bet is to go to the local DMV or Emissions testing place and see if they have rules or whatever about modifications. I know I picked up a pamphlet about engine swaps at my VEIP(MD).

^ Not necessarily true. It depends on what state you live in and the tech you take it to. Some won't even smog you if they see an intake, unless it's CARB legal.

anything after the cat will not effect your emissions. an exhaust (assuming you keep you stock catalytic converter) should in no way effect your emissions, the only thing you are dealing with is noise. in cali, OBDII cars must not be throwing any CEL. if you have cleared the codes / reset your battery, then you must drive 100 miles in order to the computer to reset itself. i remember when i smogged my civic, i was throwing a CEL, i got a scanner and cleared it and then went to the smog shop. i failed because the ECU had been reset / cleared, and he told me drive 100 miles or so to allow it to recalibrate.

that is true about clearing the codes right before you go. Also remember that while a catback will not effect emmissions, there are laws against noise levels. They really don't have a legitimate way of testing it but they can fail you for it if isn't CARB certified and they feel like being assholes. Consider how many tickets cops hand out for loud exhausts even though they admit the fact that 99% of law enforcement does not have a legitimate way of testing it.
But of course I would fight any noise ticket I got. They can't prove whether my car is louder than 95dB and I know it, and they know it. that shit will never hold up in court if you give it an honest effort

It's up to the computer to determine whether it passes or fails, although the tech might know if you've cleared any codes, based on their knowledge of the component statuses. The reason they tell you to drive your car 60 miles+ is so the onboard computer system can run its self-tests.
