jammed shifter

On 3 occasions The shifter on my 97 Acura Integra was completely jammed as I tried to shift after starting it in my driveway. After much brute force it finally went into gear & shifter fine the rest of the day. Two days later the same thing happened. A few days later a 3rd time. The dealer said that the transmission oil needed to be changed...didn't sound right to me. Another shop said the synsros were going, that made more sense except it works fine after it finally loosens up, Maybe linkage? Any suggestions? thanks Jerry

like it wont go in all the way?

syncros just need to be reset. you need to put them in third to reset. like third then first to go.

could be your clutch
i would bleed the clutch lines
and if that dosent help
i would change the tranny oil
if that dosent work then i would move on to the syncros

The shifter won't move at all to get it into 3rd or any other gear unless you beat on it etc. Going to try parking it in gear without the hand brake. Still can't figure how changing to trans. oit would help, unless it's a Honda thing.

ONLY couches pull out!!!!
i would go purchase either some gm syncromesh or some pennsoil(sp) syncromesh......youll need 3 qrts total.

drain the fluid completely........should be a drain plug right on the bottom of the transmission.....do not strip it.....its hard to get out.

after fluid has completed draining reinstall drain plug and wipe of the excess fluid or spray it off with brake cleaner....

then get up top of the car....look straight down under the intake tube on the back side of the transmission and locate your speedometer sending unit.....once located...use a long extension with a 10mm attached and remove the the one out of the three 10mm that are on it.....(the one you need to remove is slightly off center from the other two)......once that 10mm is removed.....reach down and pull the sending unit straight up and lay it out your way.( i normally let it chill right on top of the trans.)

now you should see about an inch and a quarter hole in the top of your trans........snake a long tube funnel into the hole and pour in the first 2 qaurts of syncromesh.....then you need to pay close attention to adding the third one because you only need to add half......total 2.5 qaurts..........once all fluid has settled remove funnel, clean trans off with brake clean and a rag........push the sending unit back into the hole....you dont have to shove it or force it.....just guide it and you can slightly rotate it back and forth until the plastic ear lines back up with the hole.....reinstall the 10mm.......it does not need anymore than 6lbs of pressure......so barley snug up.......check your wire to the sending unit and make sure it did not disconnect.

bam your done.

its best to change oils/ gear oils or internal lubricants when they are warm......so drive the car around the block a few times before draining.

change again every 15,000 miles.

now if you do this and your car is still having difficulties going into gear.....my suggestion is to sell your trans and upgrade.

from longest gearing to shortest gearing goes.

ls < gsr < civic si < type-r transmission.

type-r trans comes with oem lsd.(limited-slip differential)
jdm gsr and si trans have this option too.

if you have anymore questions or problems feel free to ask.

do you mean replaced?.......they only go in there one way.....then they lock in.

or are you talking about just trying to move the shifter lever around to jumble the syncros?.....btw thats not good for a trans.......neither is skipping gears........it wears out syncros alot quicker.

well me and my friends call it being reset i dont know if its the correct terminology, but like when you try to go into reverse and you cant get it in, you go to first or third to "reset" them so you can go into reverse.

On my ls sometimes i have get it half way in and then it wont go in so its just reving, then i go to third and then first. im trying a manual tranny flush hope it works

i had the same prlm in my 95 integra rs....i fixed it by puttin a new clutch in..aswell as a pressure plate and bearing...wats prlly happening is that ur clutch isnt fully sepperated from the flyweel and its not letting u shift...so one or more of the springs in the pressure plate may b broken...as was the case for me..so i changed the clutch and its been mint ever since
