building a motor on the side. which?

hey everybody,

background: i have a 2000 gsr with a healthy motor. it only has 80k miles. for awhile, i wanted to supercharge, but now i'd rather go turbo. this is my daily driver and my only car.

so i decided to take on my boost project by doing it in what i think is the most practical way: build a motor on the side and when complete, drop it in. i'd like to turbo my motor in my car and whatnot but if i'll be sleeving, boring, etc., i cant afford to have downtime considering this is my dd.

long story short, i dont wanna sound like a cheap ass but if i'm building a motor on the side, buying another gsr motor (just motor) will still be pricey compared to an ls motor or whatnot. obviously i'm on a budget just like everybody else here. all i would like is your opinions. if you were in my shoes, what would you do/how would you go about reaching turbo paradise? haha.

btw, goal is 350whp... built. i'd rather build and spend money than boost on a stock motor and feel unsafe. do it right the first time. so considering that i'll be building, sleeving, boring, etc etc the motor, what motor should i go with thats affordable?

thanks everybody, i appreciate it.

oh yeah, proposed turbo setup:

s100 with boost.
spoolin log, or some sort of ramhorn (synapse maybe)
gt28rs... disco potato. will figure specs later.
treadstone intercooler and piping
tial wastegate 44mm
synapse synchronic bov
skunk2 im

dont know about cams and such yet, i just wanna take this a step at a time and start off with which motor/platform i wanna go with.

I'd worry about the cams last if at all.. THe B18B would be a pretty good way to go for your stock build with that turbocharger. I'd lose the S100 completely though, as it is no longer supported.

just get a b18b block, same as gsr just different internals but you are gonna be switching those, bore to 83 or 84, eagle sleeves and rods, cp pistons, slap a b16a2 head on, p/p, 3 angle job, new valve train and cams then start working on your turbo setup and put it all in, in one weekend
its going to be long but every true car project is never done

for turbo, gt28 is a good size, i wouldnt do log, i would go with some awesome ramhorn then ebay intercooler they all work great, good choice on bov, not forget injectors and oil return and feed lines, check honda tech has great deals on everything, nothing agasint ci, i love this site

The B18B block is not even close to being the same as the b18c block. Learn before you teach.

If all you want is 350whp just piece together a turbo kit and throw it on your motor on a weekend. The money it would cost you to buy an ls motor and rebuild it to handle 350whp you could rent a car for your downtime and cost you half as much. Your gsr motor will support 350whp easily.

if you are set on staying at 350whp, you dont need to get sleeved. you can make 350whp on a completely stock ls with forged rods and pistons. that would be the cheapest route to go motor wise. like aussie said though, you can simply turbo the gsr in the car now and IF you get a good tune, you wont really have to worry about it. another option would be to buy an ls motor and swap it in. then build the gsr on the side. i agree with dumping the s100. it is very outdated and there are much better things out there to use. i run neptune rtp, but anything like ectune or s300 will be a great choice as well. why not go with a spoolin performance ramhorn? they make great manifolds. im running a spoolin quick4 right now. also, why not go with the synpase wastegate?

bore to 83 or 84,
Why does every body think the to bore out to 83 or 84 is necessary?

but any who. like some have said get an LS block and replace your internalsand boost it you will make plenty of power. and sleve if you want to

i wasnt saying he needed to, but if you read his first post he said he wanted to
and what is the difference block wise from ls and gsr?
i was almost sure it was just internals but i guess i'm dumb

Displacement, more displacement is always better. More displacement equals more boost because you have more room for it and less cylinder pressure. Make Sense?

i appreciate the responses guys. based on the info given here, i think i'll just boost my gsr. it IS all in the tune anyways, and we have a BADASS tuner here. i guess i can go a weekend without driving the car, right? lol.

now its just time for a compression test etc etc and get this motor running healthy first.

any clutch opinions?

Sigh... i know its good but some people seem to look at it as there only option but we have a 800whp civic that is only at 82. so i know going 84 is not necessary to get the average builders power. so why do people want to go right for it?

well i would have to say you can only get a twin disc
haha
no that would be badass but get like a Exedy or ACT
both very good, just get one that is rated for your hp rating
but i would go a little higher then your goals just to be safe
