Street Tune opinions

Question, I was going to do a full dyno tune then street tune with my car. Life is getting in the way and it is my dd so I was wondering whether or not just a street tune is worth it. pros? cons? I figured atleast this way the tuner can help make my a/f alittle better and so my car would run alittle better. I will get my car fully tuned before spring but this is just so that I can get by for now.

and no, I don't mean to go the cheap route. agian, life, bills, family is first priority but to help save me some $$, i've considered just a street tune for the time being.

street tunes are pretty good if you have a competent tuner. only real downfall is not being able to do any cam timing or ignition timing. but a street tune is perfectly safe, just make sure to be safe with the ignition timing. too advanced will cause detonation, too retarted will cause high egt's. also, when street tuning, if its a good tuner he will be able to do your maps for high rpm/low load and low rpm/high load. its easier to do those maps on the street. ive always done a street tune first, then dyno tune. dyno tuning is much more expensive, so its better to get a good map before you hit the dyno. that way you can focus more on the cam and ignition timing to squeeze those extra ponies out.

if you do get a a/f ratio gauge
make sure its WIDEBAND
or its pretty much just a gauge for show

egt gauge isnt necessarily a must have gauge. i have 7 gauges in my car, and i dont have one. wideband is a must have though, obviously you cant tune without one. target a/f for a boosted setup is 11.7-12.0 in boost. at idle, you want to shoot for 14.7 and as you dip lower into vacuum, gradually get richer until boost hits and you should be around 11.7-12.0. good luck

If you do with awide band, either go with the AEM or innovative. I just picked up the AEM one-very easy install and works great. I have a fried who autocrosses a Scirroco and he has the innovative one-loves it. He can datalog with it on his laptop, in conjuction with his standalone.

I use a PLX wideband setup. Works great

And there is nothing wrong with street tuning but it can be dangerous to those who aren't really familiar with tuning and their particular system. A wideband o2 and datalogging are required IMO

I think street tunes sucks. They're unreliable, they don't get the job done, and it's a half ass cheap way for tuners to get off not buying a dyno. It's for shoddy newbs who are trying to get into the tuning seen. I was supposed to get my car tuned today by this company in Knoxville. OTTMotorsports, I get there and the guy plans on doing a street tune to my car, I don't think so. First he's an ass and second I'm not letting someone joy ride my car around on the street driving it like an ass in an uncontrolled environment. I'm fed up, I'm buying a s300 and doing the tuning myself.

The very reason I tune my own cars. I had my GSX dyno tuned at one point but I've completely changed the setup since then. It runs great on my tuning so I don't care. I'll take it and get it fine tuned one day but both cars run great so I'm not too worried. I've read enough DSMlink datalogs to get it done

id love to learn how to tune my own cars. maybe one day ill be able to get someone to show me. basically the only thing i cant do to my car. haha

I've had four cars tuned before, all were done on chassis dynos and I was completely satisfied with all of them. I'm sorry but I don't buy into the street tuning. The problem is that they're not available everywhere and it takes forever waiting on tuners to get to you.
