I was interested and did some more researching. The only other source I found that even mentioned a special model prior to 1995 was Consumer Guide Auto, but even there, they just called it a special-model LS (RS,
LS, GS, GS-R for second gens) but mentioned the 1995 as a 'SE' (RS, LS,
SE, GS-R, Type-R for third gens). Why's that? The other sources I found didn't have much info on that. Does the door jamb say LS-SE on the G2s, as well?
From what I've been reading, it looks like if there was a second generation "SE," it came out in '93.
The main difference I'm seeing is that the LS Special = the 2nd generation ones; SE = Special Edition (it's own trim level) = introduced in 1995.
