Stereo system questions

I was told that you need an amplifier to power component systems. is this true? i cant run them off the headunit?
Same person also told me im going to need an amp. to power ANY non-stock speaker.
IF i do need extra amplifiers im planning on gettin components up front and shallow mounts in the back, with a 4-channel amp powering all the speakers. Also one bridged amp. dedicated to powering one 12 inch sub. can anyone confirm or deny this?

It's not true as a blanket statement that all component sets need an amp to run them and they can't be run off a deck. And it's not true at all that all aftermarket speakers need to be run by an amp.
Most entry level component sets can safely run off a respectably powered head unit (like a 50x4 or 60x4 Alpine, for example). I wouldn't run any component set off a stock deck. Most high end component sets have a minimum power requirement to run....and there's no aftermarket deck that has enough power to run those, they need an amp. Another thing to consider, is that speakers will sound better 90% of the time being run by an amp vs. a head unit, particularly component sets.

what tegsox said. the bad thing about running it off the deck is you really lack a lot of power, and therefore it reflects in the sound control. but it is still do-able, imo only temporarily. and im a lot happier with an amp powering my speakers. =D

JL 300/4 amp satisfies me really good for my components :thumbup: and i'm using a stock deck.

if you ever heard a car with components with out an amp, you'll understand why people tell you to amp it. i ran my alpine type R components with an alpine 7893 (24RMS) and my current Alpine 9855 (22RMS) and it sound like crap. i wanted to test how it sound.

Don't waste your money on rear speakers, its just rear fill and changes the front stage.

Ive been looking into stereo stuff for the Si, stock isnt cutting it. Want 2 way components in front stock locations, and 6x9s in the rear. Im going to "waste" money on my rears, mainly because I know I will get a cleaner sound from aftermarket mids. My teg had every mid changed, along with subs (which got removed recently)

Have 2 10" Alpine Type-S subs sitting in a box in my basement. So if I need a sub, I have 2 to use when I need it. Dont want a rattling car.

Lol. I'm runnin No stereo what so ever in my GSR =) I'm gonna start soon though. Already have a nice 4ch kicker amp for component speakers up from. I'm not doing rear.

Some people don't care much for rear speakers because they try to create a "soundstage" in front. They want to create the feeling of the band playing on a stage in front of them, so they either just run the rear speakers off the deck for a little fill, or get rid of them altogether.
Myself, creating a soundstage doesn't do it for me at all. I prefer to be completely surrounded by the music, with a perfectly even balance of volume coming from the front and the rear, so I have nice speakers in the rear of my Teg and they are run by an amp. It's just personal preference, my sister for example is a freakin weirdo and likes to have all the sound coming from the back of the car and little to nothing coming from the front, everyone likes their front/rear bias different.

okay well i think ive run into some problems. here is what im looking at:
Polk 6-1/2" Component System up front 100watts max RMS
Polk 6-1/2" Shallow 2-way Speakers in the rear 60watts max RMS
if i get a 4-channel amp that exceeds the RMS rating for the rears...say an amp between 80W-100W. is that gonna be a problem or blow the rears? i dont want to pay for components in the rear, its kinda dumb.

You'll be fine, the installer can just turn down the gain control on the amp. It's actually better to have too much power and turn it down, then to not have enough. It's better for the life of the speakers and it's better for sound quality.
