Non Integra help

I need help on my girls car. Its a 95 sentra. Check engine came on and we got it checked. Came up saying the MAFS and o2's were bad. I checked the mafs bpth ways I know to check if they are bad or just dirty. I took the voltimeter to it to see if its still getting 12+volts and it was fine. Other method I know of is unplug the mafs and if it starts running normal then its dirty.

Both ways showed it was dirty so I got some cleaner and pulled the mafs off the air intake and cleaned it. I let it sit for about 2 hours to dry and put it back on. I took the battery cable off for about an hour to try and reset the check engine. Went to start it and now it has an irratic idle, white smoke, smells like hell and still has the check engine.

I assume the bad smell is a bad cat, but I dont see how it went bad in less then a day. My guess is I didnt clean it well enough and taking the battery cable off didnt reset the check engine.

Any kind of help would work. I know this isnt the best place to put something about a Nissan, but I think this forum is a little more grown up then the nissan forums and quite frankly smarter. Lol

Try to download a service manual maybe to dbl check if your testing and resetting procedures are correct for that car.

Try disconnecting the battery and pump the brake pedal. That will usually reset the ECU. Some codes will cause the CEL to stay on until it is reset, regardless if the problem is fixed. Other times the light will shut off once the problem is resolved.

How long did you take the battery cable off? Some cars it takes longer than others to reset. Also the white smoke could be some residual cleaner left on the maf. When I cleaned my gf's it did the same thing on her lancer.

figured the white smoke was the cleaner but its still doing it after it running for like an hour and sitting over night. My main conserns though are that it idles really rough now, to point of dying every now and then. tried pumping the brakes to reset the ecu but no luck.

My hopes are that because of the mafs being dirty for as long as it was the ecu is just out of wak now. im hoping a simple ecu reset would set the air fuel ratio back to normal. Anyone else feel this could be the problem?

First get that check engine light checked out first, before you deal with the rough idling....the rough idling could be linked with your current situation...You may have a vacuum leak, loose valve, electronics...Nissan's are notorious for electrical problems.

I already did in the first comment. It was the mafs and o2. Both o2's were already brand new so I assumed it was the mafs. Checked if it was dirty or bad and it was dirty so I cleaned it. Now it runs rough. Not flaming or anything, just catching you up.

Give a better idea. Ran fine for the last year with the check engine. It died when she came to a stop sign and kept dying every time she came to a stop. The next day (friday) I took it to oreillys to get it checked and it said mafs and o2. Both o2's were brand new so i checked the mafs. checked out to be dirt so I cleaned it friday night. Saturday I reinstalled it and thats when it started idling rough. test drove it to see if it would clear up. Sunday cleaned the throttle body, tune up.. etc. Nothing helped. Monday/yesterday was when I started asking around(including this) so far nobody really has a solid answer other then electrical. I would agree but all the electrical has been completely redone less then a year ago.

EDIT: Check engine was originally the o2 sensor. I replaced bth but forgot to clear the check engine light. Thats why I figured it was the mafs. Sorry I realized I wasnt clear.
