Drop the speed limit to 55mph and help fight terrorism, lower gas prices, help earth!

Gearing is very important as well thus why newer AT have 8 speeds or more to stay in that sweet spot which is usually around 40% of redline, that is just an estimate. Even if you have low RPM's, that doesn't mean that the pulse-width on the fuel injectors isn't opened longer. That is precisely what happens. Increase the pulse-width, injector stays open longer and uses more fuel. Regardless of gearing, you would hit a wall around 60mph. If this weren't the case, then people would be getting crazy amounts of MPG going at very high rates of speed. If drag had no effect, then a car going 100mph at 2,000rpms would get amazing MPG's, as we know, that isn't the case thanks to drag. What a drag!:x

Well then your solution sounds like an open loop operation using a super lean fuel table with a lower geared transmission at the same speed limit then.

Interesting little read on a new study that covers the effects of speed on MPG.
Hey, lead foot! You're throwing away money. - NBC News

"Studies show that fuel economy has become the number one concern among American car buyers – but motorists have also been pressing for higher speed limits, which can sharply reduce the mileage a car gets."

Why on earth did you bump this?

Can we just get a thread lock please? Thanks.

Is this thread still alive? Damn... haha.

Why not have a staged speed lane system on our highways?

Basically its how the autobahn operates. So you can go 55 all day long in the right lane and save some $, whist I willingly "throw away" my money for my own pleasure/entertainment as I fly by going 150+.

If I so choose to enjoy using a few extra bucks to enjoy my drive then thats my choice. I shouldnt have to conform to what you want. Just as you dont have to go 65, 75, etc. Just stay out of the left lane.

I've thought of that too, they should have staged lanes which exist in society but not in the eyes of law. Although, after talking myself out of my second parking ticket, I learned of a new term called "spirit of the law" which basically means an officer can choose when to enforce the law... Talk about abuse of power?!

Yea, its ridiculous.

I think stages are the answer, but of course within this broken system so aggressively opposed to change I fear we will never see it. Even when every new car has the ability to be controlled safely at speeds near 100mph the system will be stuck at its current level. IMO as a result of red tape and piss-poor requirements for getting a license. If we made the tests harder (as they should be) our roads would become SOOOOOO much safer.

GOOD! Maybe she learned a lesson. That or the parents did.

If the system is too damn easy, its the parents job to make sure the teen know hoe to drive. You better believe my kids will get some supplement training. I think Skip-Barber is a good option (they have a young driving school).

I still feel that it is also a money game, every car can hit 100 easy, and with inside noise being reduced, cars pick up speed quickly and can catch a driver off guard of going faster then they thought.so a cop waits in spots that is known to have cars moving quicker to rack up the tickets. Or at lease here when its 400 dollars for. Speeding ticket
