So my dad bought some projectors for his jeep...

The stock headlights in jeep Cherokees are CRAP. Horrid light output especially in the rain. Since the stock headlamps cannot be retrofitted (the bulb is part of the housing) he bought some H4 projector headlights off of eBay. Good right? WRONG. They're not even projectors. They have a projector LENS that's bolted to the housing with an H4 bulb stuck in there. Wtf. The light output is worse than the stock one if that's even possible. He already has a ddm tuning hid kit on its way. What we're gonna do is buy some morimoto mini h1 projectors from TRS and retrofit them into the aftermarket housings since the mounting screws are already there. I'm contemplating reporting the seller for false advertisement because it clearly stated "Projector Headlights" -_-

Good call on the morimoto retrofit. They should be a plug n play. Matt is fucking awesome to deal with. Always giving me great deals on parts that I'm looking for. You should contact the seller and tell them that slapping on a piece of glass in front of a bulb, does not make it a projector.

Projectors and HIDs are different things. I like your idea though.

Edit: nvm I read it wrong. Those things you bought are gay. Sorry dude.

Yeah...it looks like the morimotos come with an adaptor for the h4 bulbs to fit in. Hopefully that will save my dad from having to return his h4 hids to ddmtuning for a pair of h1s.

why cant you retrofit into the stock housings? Chop up and cut out what you dont need so that you can mount up a projector. Thats how its done in the first place. Bulb part of the housing? It has to be removable somehow to be replaced. On other headlamps you remove the oem bulb. Same process for whatever aftermarket headlamp you ended up with. If youre thinking a retrofit into an assembly thats a projector to start with is somehow easier, thats only the case with some aftermarket setups and other cars. They unbolt right out of the bracket. In the case of g3 integras the front half of the projector is molded into the bracket. Takes the longest to retro because you have to gut the projector out of the bracket. S2k is also molded in but you wouldnt retro these. Jdm headlamps are also molded in.

Bulb is part of the housing. No way to remove it without breaking the seal. For headlights like dad's Cherokee Sport you have to buy a whole new lamp assembly when the light goes bad. $100 a pop. Even if it wasn't that way, the lens of the housing is textured like DA headlights so hids won't work well with it unless you change the lens. I'm just gonna use the mounting holes that hold the "projector" lens in place on the aftermarket housings to hold the morimoto minis in place after they come in if we order them. First we're gonna see how the lights look once the hid kit comes in then we'll go from there.

haha you seem to be missing the part about it being custom fabrication. Chop the bulb out so you have an opening for the igniter and bulb, mount the projector in the housing. The fluted lenses sucks but some go the route of making clear lenses for them. Not saying you should but pointing out the options available. Only way i can think of not being able to retro is space too small for a projector. Im just giving you a hard time about it though. Go the easy route where possible. Should post some pictures of what youre working with.

Haha I know but I hate cutting into stuff. Gonna cringe when I retrofit my 3rd gen's headlights lol. I'll post some pics after I get up. Just got off from 3rd shift tonight. 10-6 :p

I hate cutting things up lol. I just found a guide using projectors from TRS on a Cherokee so I think I'll survive :p

Sorry for the late response. Been busy. Anyway here's pics of what I'm dealing with:

So you can see they're crap...lol. except that we can use them for a retrofit in the future. Right now he just wants functional so he bought some plain old reflector headlamps that accept H4 bulbs. We'll see how they turn out.

Thats the headlamp?? lol The problem with that is that theres no room to fit the projector. But heres what you would do. Come up with a means of mounting/securing, cut out a hole, fabricate your mounting procedure and finish project. More than likely it'll stick out the back and assuming the vehicle has room for that, i would make an enclosure for it. Alll in all thats f***ing easier to retrofit than gen 3 headlamps. If cutting and/or drilling is not your thing, retrofitting is not for you.

Alternatively, some people retro hid fogs into non hid fogs so they might be small enough to fit inside that. Never looked into it personally but im sure theres something that would fit. You still have to drill holes for mounting etc.

Yeah I already found a tutorial for retrofitting morimotos into an aftermarket Cherokee headlight housing. They do stick out the back but they used foil tape and other stuff to seal it.
