To go off your issue, Tuning is generally more of a service is very hard to come by to get hooked up on. I know when I was looking around for a tuner and even had a bunch of friends that were in good with a tuner in town but I still could not get a deal with tuning. Tuning is an entire other aspect of a build sort of like tranny specialists.
Looking at it from the tuner's perspective, it makes sense too. I mean they probably have like tons of other people asking for a hook up on tuning as well because tuners are so limited.

Yeah I'm having to have someone come from Idaho falls in order to do it. I can't get a quote from people here because there are no legit shops that tune. They're all people who do it at their homes and they don't want to give you a quote because they want to leave it open to charge what they want. I had one guy tell me it'll be 1000+. I don't mind paying for it, I'd just like to know an approximate cost.

Was going to ask what the actual hold up on the tune was but you answered. Where the hell do you live thats so remote theres no shops in driving distance to tune from? I thought R13 was the only one who lived in the woods. :laugh: <3 Fuck anything around 1000 is like :roll: I dont know if Raceline charges more for a turbo tune (kinda doubt it) but his rate is a flat $350 all day. Too bad thats in cali and i know youre not from around here.

I live in the capital city of Boise in Idaho haha but there's a ton of cars but they're all tuned in peoples garages. Not only do you spend a huge chunk of money that you wouldn't spend elsewhere but you take a risk on them giving you a bad tune and blowing up your car. I've been going on a local car enthusiast forum and they all recommend this guy who lives in Idaho Falls. He charges a flat fee but then again you're tuning it on the street instead of a dyno. I wish I had the money I'd put it on a trailer and drive it to a legit shop to get it tuned. I think the closest place I could go is Utah about 6 hours away.What you mean sometimes... Whats their charge? The total might come out close and done legitly. 6 hours in your situation might not be a bad compromise. Dylan (samurai_blue) came all the way down to la from nor cal to tune at raceline but he didnt soley drive down if i remember. He was already at a track event and made it a trip. I dont know if id ever rely on a street tune, especially when the cost is still up there. Its just not a full tune in my eye. Temporary and dirt cheap, maybe.. just to get going. I mean its better than a stock tune right?

Yeah right now I have a base map installed on the car. It's still not right though and I don't want to risk driving it around and making it worse. The cats clogged so it stinks like crazy. The cat wasn't clogged before the new injectors and fuel pump were put in. I'm assuming they melted the inside of the cat and caused it to clog because there's too much fuel. I only had the base tune put on it so that I could drive it to the car show and back and put it back in the garage until tuning time. I may end up looking up some shops in Utah to see the cost it was built in Utah actually to begin with.

I’ve gone through your entire build thread and there are a lot of holes in the build progress. You built this engine with some quality party it looks like but I read you were waiting to get it tuned for over a year now. So how have you been driving an untuned engine? Did you break this engine in? I didn’t read anything about that process.
You mentioned it wouldn’t create any boost. How was that resolved? And why are you trying to boost on an untuned engine? Regardless if the engine was built for boost does not mean you can boost an untuned engine. That’s a common misconception; you can damage it just as easily as a stock engine. If your boosting on a basemap then Im worried you've already damaged your engine.
There are ways to make the car safe to drive to a tuner. You can pull out the wastegate spring so no boost can be generated. You can drive on the stock injectors, MAP and O2 sensors etc with the stock ECU. Those items are easily swapped back at the tuners and will allow a full dyno and street tune.
Worst case scenario I would recommend trailering it to the tuners. You’ll be in much better hands going to the tuner versus the tuner coming to you. Primarily the dyno but also tools and resources he wont be able to bring with him. Typical $500~750 is the cost of a full tune assuming no additional mechanical or wiring work is needed which is often the case.

The motor itself was built in 2004 in Utah. I didn't build the motor I bought the car like that. I didn't know the motor was built until we went to do a head gasket change. Since then I've removed the motor got a wire tuck and painted the engine bay. The car has literally been sitting in my garage for over a year. I didn't drive it so I'm pretty sure I didn't do damage to the motor. I put a basemap on it so that I could drive it the car show and I stayed out of boost. In the beginning we couldn't get it to boost because we were trying to make sure that we hooked everything back up correctly that is it. That is the whole point of my frustration is that I have a beautiful car that I haven't been able to drive in over a year.

What happens when you try to boost? How much boost does the gauge say? The turbo could be s***. Was it used? Does it spin freely by hand? at idle? No boost can also be the tune (or lack of). Do you have a wideband O2 to monitor AFR with? If the engine is overly lean it won’t have enough exhaust energy to generate boost. And during this condition is when you melt engine parts which is why I am hesitant to have you attempt this again.

I had the turbo checked out its good and it definately worked before the engine was pulled. I just bought a wideband but never installed it yet. The gauge wouldn't go above zero just vaccum.
