You wont damage your trans by shifting it manually, there is nothing to damage by doing that, its merely stupid to try to do what the automatic can do faster. Damage occurs when you violently force the internals to do something they are not designed for, such as an N bomb from 5000rpm.

Adjust the position of the shifter to limit it to the highest gear you wish it to go to
