Winter wonderland...and batteries. Help!

Its colder now here since I just got back from a warmer place with my car (well, 6 hours away) I start my car up the next morning and it won't start. I charged the battery, tried starting my car agian, still wouldn't start. I bought a new battery, put it in, my car started right up. Lights were bright, interior lights were bright, sound system sounding great, wipers fast as normal.

The next morning, i goto start my car, lights are dimmer, wiper is slower and didn't think anything of it and drove to work (40 miles away). Made it half way, my lights get eve dimmer, wiper even slower, deck dies, and the door lights on my gauge cluster lights up. Rush to my grandma's place cause I didn't want to be stranded, car dies in her driveway. Try starting it and it goes "click click click." Car doesn't start. I wait 2-3 minutes, and the car starts right up agian, with the same symptoms.

After work, 17 hours later, the car starts right up. lights are not as dim as before, wipers are just alittle slower than normal and someone told me to take off the postive while the car is running to check my alternator. I did so, the car was still running.

Is it my battery or my alternator? Ground? if so, which?

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to put the details in so I can get better assistance.

Put a new battery in and start the car. While your car is running, disconnect the battery. If the car dies, it's def your alt, but the way it sounds, your alt is the problem.

The battery is brand new. Two days old. I disconnected the postive, should it be the other way around? leave positive on and take off negative?

Idk, it could have been a weak battery, but it could also be a short somewhere. Try removing both, either your alts going bad, or you got a short somewhere.

so I took it to autozone to test out. honestly, the dude seemed like he didn't know what he was doing, but i'll give him the benefit of the doubt cause he had the tester. The meter showed that I was around 13, but less than 14 volts. He says my alternator is bad. Can someone confirm this? He also tested my battery and it turned out that the battery was "Good" but "Low charge."

the alt should give off around 13.6 volts or around there... but even if it is working at that time.. it sounds like the alt is about to go out... i would recommend to replace that and them put your battery on a slow charge. to get it back up to 12.6volts
