What to look for when buying parts

Hey Every one, I'm going to go look at some parts a guy is selling. I was just wondering if you can give me some advice on what to look for when looking at these parts. I'm looking into getting a b18c1 block. Pistons, rods, crank, oil pan. I just wanna know what too look for to see of the parts are junk or worth buying. I'm planning on doing my own build. So please if you can give me some pointers that would be great.
