What does it mean to have an intrusive motor?

My timing belt went out on my 98 Acura Integra LS. I called a few mechanics and some said that the cost of the repair depends on if I have an intrusive motor. If it is then the repair will cost a few thousand dollars. How do I know if I have an intrusive motor?

Did ur timing belt pop or went out while the motor was running? basically if ur valves and pistons met then yes u have damage, and depending on the shop it could cost ALOT but good luck? lol

Thanks yeah I was driving on the interstate and the car just died. I used to work at a dealership and I have never heard of an intrusive motor before. The mecanics I have talked to keep asking me if it is an intrusive motor. I didn't know if all of the 98 integra ls moters were the same or not.

I think you mean the mechanic asked you if you had an interference motor. Motors are either interference or non-interference. Your engine is an interference motor, which means the pistons chase the valves, meaning that if the timing belt breaks, it is possible for the pistons to hit the valves when the timing of the two is thrown off by the broken timing belt. It's not guaranteed to happen, but it is possible, it's likely actually. I got lucky in the past, my timing belt broke, but the pistons didn't hit any valves. If your pistons hit any valves, you could be in for a huge repair bill.

your pistons and valves made sweet love. Time for new valves. Go ahead and throw some valve seals in there to. Also have the head pressure tested because it could have cracked the head. Resurface it too. Clean the top of the block and use all new gaskets. Throw a water pump in there to.

So put a new belt on it and just hope for the best? I am trying to weigh my options:
1. Pay thousands for the repair
2. Sell it and just get a new car
Really what are the odds that it is ok?

You can buy a new engine and swap it for the amount of money you would pay for fixing an engine after timing belt snap damage.

I broke a timing belt last may. I was going 50, I had to have a new head and everything. 1700 bucks including labor. If you were on the highway i really doubt that all it will need is a timing belt. I fixed mine bc my car was pretty nice and it was hard to find a solid car for the price range.
