You can swap any B series motor in without much additional work. B17a, B18c1, B18c5, and B16. You would need a VTEC ecu and wire harness or to modify your current wire harness to add the vtec wiring.

B17a1 (1.7L 160 hp) --- very rare and you probably won't come across one of these
B18c1 (1.8L 170 hp)
B18c5 (1.8L 190 hp)
B16a2 (1.6L 160 hp)

Awesome info man, thank you so much. I will keep an eye out for one of those B18C5 setups.
That would be more than enough horsepower for me N/A.

EDIT: Hey wait, that B17a1 is the setup in my current car i just picked up!!
Do you think I could sell it and get a B18C5 for the same?

:shock::suprise:

If you have a B17a1 (would be stamped on the block on the front of the motor) then you should already be rocking VTEC.

Oh WOW man!!!
i've got to get my engine looked at by someone!!
I don't know anything about this car and I NEED to!!

So it's on the front of the block facing the radiator? I will go out and look there in a minute. I hope it's not too dirty, I'm at work.

Hmmm....That would explain why it picks up so fast!

You should already be hitten vtec if you have the b17a1.

buy b18c5 for the same price as b17a1? probably not. .B18C5 = Type R motor.

DOH! Ah well, it was nice to think that would work hehe....

That 190hp sounds sooo nice though.
I just noticed that my transmission uses a cable and not hydraulic fluid for the clutch.
Is that safe? should I buy a backup clutch cable just in case this one snaps? I remember going through clutch cables on my bike when I was building it and didn't have the routing juuuuuust right.

Also check out your transmission stamp... Info about the B17a1 transmission (in case you find the block stamp you are already rocking the B17a1)

B17A1 (Cable):
YS1

This transmission is found on the rare "blacksheep" of b-series motors. The most important feature here is that its cable-type. This means you can bolt this into any 93 and older integra and 91 and older civic without having to change to hydraulic. The synchro's on this transmission are still considered weak, however the gearing is very good for all motor applications as its identical to the B16A transmissions. Finally, this transmission did not have factory LSD, so keep that in mind when someone is trying to tell you otherwise. Look to pay between 400-600 dollars for this transmission, although its going to be difficult to find and usually when you do, there is something wrong with it.

The YS1 cable tranny is typically the most saught after cable tranny due to its close gear ratios but note you will need to research your full transmission stamp code because Honda also named the B18a1 transmissions YS1 with longer gear ratios.

Awesome! Thank you. Do you know where on the transmission to look to find the code? It's pretty oily under there and I'd rather go directly to the spot to clean and look rather than wiping the whole underside of the car looking for it.

Thanks,
