speed sensor

Hello everyone, Iam new to this forum. I have a 89 integra with 240K miles. My check engine light came on the other day indicating my speed sensor is bad. I wanted to know where it was and where can I get one? Also, my alternator only puts out about 12 volts at idle speed, but when I start driving or rev the engine I get the 14.7 volts needed to charge the battery. Is my alt on its way out? Should I change it now or wait until it fails altogether?

the speed sensor is towards the back of the tranny right where the tranny/engine mount together...you should see a cable going from in into the firewall on the drivers side
