shift knob problem?

ok so i went to unscrew my shift know and it feels like the rob going to from the knob all the way is turning with it. and now im too scared to keep going cause idk if im unscrewing something else too. is this normal? i bought the brass knuckle shift knob.

So you can't thread it on any tighter? Like it just won't twist clockwise anymore without fresspinning?

I had that happen to the knob on my EF. I don't know if there's a way to fix it I ended up just getting a new short throw and knob.

I think his problem is that he can't get the knob off, because the shift rod is unscrewing too.
I didn't know it could do that. Maybe try to grip it with some pliers.

yeah thats whats happening. so pliers? i dont wanna tear shit up and make it look shiity but ill give it a try i guess, it just seems weird cause everyone else seems to be able to twist theirs right off.

the knob should twist right off. Can you actually see the shifter rod turning as you twist the knob? or are you looking too far into it?

if it is pure brass (which i doubt) then you can freeze the knob and the threads should be a little loser than before. Brass is very sensitive to heat, so i would think its sensitive to cold to, since "cold" is absense of heat. take a bag of ice and throw it over the knob, let it sit for about 8 hours and try again. For extras, use pliers (i prefer vice grip but your choice) and a rubber glove to grip the knob and give it try.

Yeah just wrap the rod in something and clamp some vise grips on it. If you can't physically see it turning, it's probably not.

or keep it simple and just wrap a shop towel around the rod... and grab it with vise grips and hold it... (if the rod is even turning...)

I thought the OEM rod was one piece with two bends in it, if the whole rod was turning, you'd know it. Google a pic of it, you'll see what I'm talking about.

The shifter can't spin, it is bolted to the shift linkage.

In this picture, you can see how the shifter is attached to the shift rod. The shifter has ball the fits in a housing on the upper rod, the bottom of it has a bearing that bolts to the lower shift rod.
