Rust Issue and underlying problems

First off, I believe I have made a good decision to pick up my current 94 LS. It has a good engine, transmission, etc. My only gripe is the fact that is has a decent bit of rust. One day I decided to replace the rear speakers in the car. while i had the entire rear of the interior sitting out in my driveway, i noticed about a quarter inch of standing water in the spare tire well. also some dampness on either side in the quarter panels. Yes there are rust holes there, but I didn't think it would be that bad, to be honest. The previous owner said the original spoiler/wing rusted off and left some slightly rusty holes (which were promptly covered with several layers of electrical tape, ) There are also some rust holes down on the lip of the hatch. While all that is fixable, my question is this: Why the hell was there standing water in the spar tires well?

I got it dried out and sprayed with undercoating and let that dry before I put the car back together.

And also, what would be a good way to cover those holes? is welding my only option? i don't ever want them back open again so welding would'nt be an issue, it looks better without the wing IMO

I believe your only method of covering the holes would be welding in new panels. Covering it with electrical tape for example would only mask the problem and let it get worse. I've seen people patch holes with bondo and such but that's not going to get you anywhere. Your best bet would be to cut out all the pieces of rust and weld in new metal, primer and paint it.

Good luck.

Holes + Rain = Water in your car... Is that really that hard to figure out?
I really don't think that answered his question. I saw no where in there he was asking "Why is my car full of water?"

Yes, sir, I have that concept down pat, thank you. I was wondering where it would be coming from and what holes would leave that much standing water in the spare tire well. I have figured i might as well either patch it up or replace the entire hatch, since it has so much rust. Paint and bodywork aren't an issue for me, but there will not be much left of the original hatch to constitute fixing all the rust holes.

It could be other things and not your rust holes. You might just swap out the hatch, but the leak could be from tail lights or something like that.
