rough idle and the speedometer doesn't work(wtf)

last night i was driving home and my check engine light came on which is ok since im running a test pipe. but then i look down and my speedometer doesn't work and the car wont engage vtec. i come up on a red light and my car is idling rough (fluctuating back and forth from 1,000 to 2,000. i went to autozone to borrow there scan tool but they cant lend theres out anymore because of some new californian law. does any one know what this could be im at loss of words at this point.

if the speedo doesnt work usually thats an electrical problem... but i would get your hands on a scanner and see if you are throwing any more codes...

crap i dont get paid till fri day i was just going to try to wing it but i guess i cant without that scan tool.....

has to be eletrical, that would answer why vtec wont engage, maybe the solenoid isnt getting any power?

Have you tried cleaning your IAC valve? That could cause the rough idle.

check your tps and map sensors, loose connections/breaks in those have caused my previous teg to idle like crazy

yeah i fixed it i replaced the throttle body and tps with a used one then i got a new alternator and battery, and i cleaned out the IAC but it still idles kind of weird.
