Rotary vs Piston

So I been on the look for a good drift car or a car I could at least tune and drift. I came across an 84 rx7. Has a stock rotary engine and a welded diff. Welded right too, oiled and all. Other then that the car is crap. Interior is torn apart and the exterior is thrashed, but I actually would rather have inside and out destroyed.. Less chances of it getting stolen. Plus he only wants 750 for it

Supposedly just needs an O ring on the front housing.

Im going to get it no matter what though even if I have to pull the rotary. I have a 350 lined up and ready to drop in just in case.

Anyways though.. The main question

What do you guys think is better engine? Rotary or Piston driven?

Obviously They both have strong and weak points. Piston driven is easier to modify and find replacement parts. Rotary has a lot less moving parts to in theory is more reliable. Rotary uses more gas due to the bigger combustion chamber. But Rotary starting hp and torque tends be higher(depending on engine and comparission)

Just looking to get some input. I plan on using the rotary unless it turns sour. I would be the only rotary drifter at the track.

Drift cars should have instant torque, you want the V8. Rotaries need to spin at high rpm to make any power. Plus the rotaries are notoriously unreliable and difficult to work on, especially the older generations. You wouldnt have to do anything to the V8 to make big power. Easy choice, LSx.

I have had a couple buddy with fc and fd but for the most part they all have swapped out there motors even built motors to v8 but me personally don't no jack about rotary's

Im gunna try and stay with the rotary as long as I can just because it will be less work for now. But Im gunna try and go with a full turbo system if I can mainly because I love the sound of a real blow off valve. Lol. If I go with the v8 then Im not really going to need the extra hp in such a small car so im just going to supercharge. Im trying to get everything done as easily as I can cause no matter what It going to be a long project.

I will have to reweld the diff, strip the car and remove the rust. There is a few places rusting out. Full cage, and im gunna need to get some chamber going

dont rotary engines burn tons of oil and have seal/gasket problems? you probably would have to rebuild it..

Thats true.. and I have never worked on a rotary engine or even seen someone work on one so I will be screwed. I get how that work and I really like the idea of rotarys but I think im going to give the stock engine a few runs around my buddies dirt track to get a good idea if its going to hold up or not.

most likely gunna go through with the swap just because in the long run I wont need to spend as much money to get sideways.

Thanks guys for all the input
