Removing speedo cable from tranny

I read posts about removing the cable from the cover, greasing it up and inserting it back into the cover (sheath?). They all made it look and sound easy but when I finally found it, it was buried way down where I could barely reach it. Now bonehead popped the cover out from the tranny but the cable is still attached and I can't get it out and then I couldn't get the cable fed back up into the cover to replace it back in the hole. There's supposed to be a clip holding it in but I can't see any. I'm guessing I have to remove a bunch of stuff off the engine to really get at it but I need to drive somewhere tomorrow. So now I got half a foot of cable still hanging out of the transmission.

Yes, I know I shouldn't work on cars, EVER, but I don't seem to learn that lesson. I'm really low on funds so I was trying to save a buck and now I'm screwed as I don't have the money to have someone fix it.

There is a weird looking clip that should be under that cover you are talking

This pic should help you find it

Thanks so much for your reply. I do need to replace the head gasket as well so I'll probably do those at the same time. I can't get my hand down there to replace it without removing some stuff form the engine.

I haven't been able to find a good resource for how to change the head gasket, at least not on this specific car.
