Putting the car away for winter.

So as the title says, I am putting my car in the garage for the winter and I want to do some engine work to it. I want to do some internal work to it.

What are some surefire ways to get a noticeable horsepower increase without going turbo, supercharger, vtec, or nitrous?

I talked to a friend and he said get performance camshafts and cam gears. This a good idea?
