i just picked up a back bumper for my car and plan on painting it myself. my question is how do i get the old paint off? do i just sand it down, or is there any sort of chemical to use? There is two layers of paint, it looks like the bumper was originaly green and then was painted black.

You dont need to take all the old paint off. All you need to do is wetsand it with 200grit to get the new paint to stick to it. Wetsand with 200 between each coat. Dont be afraid to completely dunk the paper in water. Id use a block or those paint sponges to make sure the sand job is even.

yea but i think i do have to sand a bit more than that because it was a lot of chips, scratches and peeling. It sucks though cause some of the crappy spots are in places i cant really sand.

Personally, I'd leave it up to the body shop. I am not a professional and I didn't want to screw anything up. I started to do mine, but I said screw it.

sounds like a combination of sanding with that wet sand 200 grit mentioned above... and some kind of filler for the deeper chips..i imagine it wud require some kinda of patching or filling to help..yes..no? :)

..im not a paint pro but the same thing happened to my ceramic dragon im making for art class..gotta cement patch some deeper cracks..and sand the rest...lol

I dunno if i have to fill anything, i think i can just sand it all out. I started off using 100 grit, once i get it down ill go to something higher
