Yeah, they'd be pretty old on a 96. Heating them up should give them some flexibility and make the sticky goo underneath more elastic, so they'll lift up easier and less likely to break. The stripes on my Civic weren't from the factory, so they were still pretty strong and came off pretty easy, only broke a few times the entire legnth of the car. They were put on by freakin' Macco, I think. The car had a horrible paint job, and when I got the pinstripes off, you could still easily see where they were! There were indentations in the paint because I think they painted the car, then put the pinstripes on, then put there pathetic excuse of a clearcoat on. I'm not saying you should worry about your paint under the stripes, you'll be fine if you car has factory paint. Or if it was repainted, it was done at a quality shop by someone who knew what they were doing.
