Version of photoshop, a friend gave me a copy. Love it for shooting in RAW, messed around with a little HDR. Never with a car though, not a huge HDR whore.

ahh....id buy photoshop but ....
1. i dont have a dslr, so i dont see a use...
and
2. i barely know how to use my ghetto photoshop rip off...."layers" confuse me. i dont get it..

It just takes some trial and error, that's how I did it. Then I asked the pro, he then told me the faster way to do it.

well first step would be buying a dslr...which i might do after buying sidemarkers and some new paint for my lip/bumper

Which are you looking at? I have a Nikon, friend of mine shoots with Canon. I've considered switching, my first was a D40. Nice starter camera

A point and shoot is sufficient. You just need a stable stand (tripod) or steady hand, learn how to use the manual settings (white balance, focus, etc), and use photoshop. They shots may not be as crisp because the resolution isnt as high, but when I turn the reso on my point and shoot up, they dont turn out too bad.

Layers are how people make shots of a see through hood into the engine bay. One shot with the hood open, one with hood closed. They lay the closed bay shot over the open bay, then turn the transparency up in that area so you can see through the hood.
