Ls head info..ls vtec or rebuild stock head

Hi I would like to say I'm new here,I have a 95 Ls integgy and my girlfriend also has a 95 Ls.Here's the scoop,my girlfriends car is puffing smelly kinda blueish white smoke usually it only comes out usualy more on down shifts or upshifts and when you rev it out the smell get really noticeable!!!The car doesn't seem to burn oil,but then again I told her to take it easy with the car and shift at 2-2500 rpm.I changed the oil with royal purple 5w30 and new ngk v groove plugs,seams to not smell as much but its still there,I was told the valves where probably worn!!!What should the compression be if the rings are worn?So if I'm thinking this winter that I take of the head and rebuild it and do some work to bump up the horsepower,but the ls vtec swap sounds like the better way to gain hp?Any help or guidance is gladly taken!!!!Thanks.

There is one good thing about LS heads, and that is that they are cheap. I would get another LS head and have some work done to it, and just keep the LS without the vtec.

I know there are many threads but the bunch I looked at never sayed what the hp gains are,I assume you dont gain the full 28 hp differance from 142 to 170?What are the mods and hp gains you can do to a stock head?Somebody must know or have a good guess,thanks.

What does the smoke smell like? Does it smell like...sweet and sticky? It could be burning coolant.

my friend had a stock b18b block with a stock gsr head, I/H/E and an IM and put down 172 whp...tuned at kingmotorsports

Wow....would 120 000 miles on the engine be able to handle the vtec head?I looked over 80 pages so far and I believe everthing hasn't been covered about the ls vtec swap!!!I was almost convinced before I seen what Integraguy04 wrote that you have to build the whole motor to do the ls vtec swap right!!!!!!I also seen a thread that says that if you just bolt on the vtec head it does nothing.....Can someone tell what parts are needed,The head/Intake/pcu is all i can think of,but then again I'm only new at this!!!!!Thanks for any help in advance.

ok there is a lot of stuff you need...just to let you know that you will prolly spend like 2-3 thousand dollars converting an ls to ls/vtec you need

head, ecu, vtec conversion kit (golden eagle), vtec headstuds, wire you car for vtec (if not already), vtec dizzy, vtec water pump, vtec oil pump...i also recommend getting hondata s300 system becuase ls/vtecs do not like "basemap tunes" definately get it tuned right away...just drive it very conservatively to the shop and have them tune it...

edit...and yes a stock b18 that has 120K on it should be fine...just compression test it...you also might want to get the head/block milled a little bit just so you have a fresh surface and also see if your block/head is warped as well

This was going to be my setup...then i decided to go all motor non-vtec

B18 Block w/ rotating assembly 175
P30 Pistons w/ rings 300
Head Gasket 85
ARP Rod Bolts 50
Type R Head complete w/ IM, OBD1 Dizzy?, etc. 1500
Hondata IM Gasket 65
replace gaskets, water pump, oil pump 150
Tune 450
Hondata s300 500
VTEC ECU 150
Misc 300
Total 3725

Sounds abit pricey...but the outcome looks like you get 60 more hp,rather than the 30 hp of going with a b18c,I just wanted to do a head rebuild on her car this winter when we put the car away so I guess the ls vtec swap is alot more than I thought if you want it done right.

yea it is a lot more than what ppl think...my buddy learned the hard way...he thought he only needed like the head and ecu, and he had to stop the project for a month cuz he ran outta money...but when he finished it was worth it...best time in it i believe on street tires was a 13.9 (at a shitty track)

Was in a 93 Civic Hatchback

For now I think I'll just take off the head and get it rebuilt with porting done to it.I find it kinda interesting that alot of people dis the ls vtec swap and then there are some that just love it...with turbo it sounds like it is amazing....

yea it all depends on what you wanna do...my friends ls/vtec always kept blowing headgaskets which was kinda shitty but i was a very healthy motor until he started to really whale on it constantly...then the rings started to go

Thats definatly not a good thing to be having problems like that.More power is always nice but then again reliability is nice...when she get her jeep and the integgy isn't her DD no more then sure why not blow up some motors,but until that day comes reliability is greater in this case.Thanks for your 2 cents man!!!
