your saying you pulled the number one plug and it cranks now? will it crank again with the plug put back in?

if it's starting without the number 1 cylinder hooked up then you might have skippde timing somehow

it will only crank when i put something medal in the plug wire i was checking for spark like that with a screwdriver in the wire and holding it close to the valve cover looking for spark and it fired right up but when you put it back on the plug it only spins over

thats one of the oddest things ive ever heard. so im guessing you left the plug in the head and just pulled a wire. you may have a ground issue maybe.

ive never heard of an engine cracking better with a plug wire grounded. unless your jumping spark some how. all wires are firing? make sure plugs are also firing. just cause you have spark to the wires doesnt mean its firing.

It really sounds like your grounding in the cylinder. Check your spark plug wires to see if one is cracked or torn. Even though the spark is jumping through the screwdriver, when its in that tight cylinder it might be catching the wall and grounding. Mine did that a few weeks ago, bought a set of Bosch wires and fired right up.
