I think my motor is ready to be pulled.

Well i think its ready. I had the ls with a turbo. And i was trying to get all of the bugs worked out before we tuned it. But i took it up the street twice.! bad mistake. Now it smokes and spudders when the second time coming back. which make me believe detonation. And it smokes bad. does that mean motor is toast and i should pull it and drop another in, while i build that one. OrYeah let me know. thanks

Start with a compression test. That doesn't sound very good though. You may have cracked a ring land or something else. And yes that wasn't a very good idea

You could have just done a boost leak test. That doesn't even require you to start the engine. You take a radiator hose, cap it with a PVC cap, seal the capped end, put a valve stem in the cap and use some clamps to put it on the intake side of the turbo. Then you can pressurize the whole intake tract with an air compressor or even a bicycle pump

are you serious? thats freaking awesome. I will have to do that. If the motor isnt junk. Or when i do a new one.

That is the best way to test for leaks. It is much easier to hear a boost leak without the engine running. Just get like 6 inches of radiator hose that is the same diameter as your turbo inlet and a PVC cap that fits inside it tight. Drill a hole in the cap and put a valve stem in it. Then just use something to seal it up with and clamp it to the turbo and pressurize the intake with a pump or air compressor. Just don't over pressurize it!

It is a cheap thing to fabricate. Here is a link: Just make sure you build one that matches the size of your compressor inlet

It's just a DSM technique. We have Mass Air Flow sensor cars so if there is a boost leak it will run like shit (really rich) due to the air being read by the MAF sensor but coming up missing.
