[How To] USDM 94-97 Tails to 98+ JDM

Thanks to Coy and Jayson for telling me how to, needs, etc.

Okay. I think i did a terrible job, but the difference is noticeable. I've never hated Adhesive more than ever in my life till now.

Needs:
  • Heat Gun
  • Screw Driver (Flat Head)
  • Chopsticks (Optional if you are scared of cracking the tails like i did)
  • Paint Thinner
  • RTV Sealant
  • Grey/Silver/Metallic Primer (I think the outcome is all the same. My grey primer sprayed out metallic-like)
  • A lot of time if you are noob. like i am.
  • 8mm Deep drive socket for SEDANS. 8mm Wrench or pliers for coupes/hatches.

1. Pop your trunk open to find the 8mm bolts that are holding your tails to your car. For a coupe/hatch, i believe there are 6 PER tail light (12 in total). For the sedan owners like me, Honda wanted to kill us, so they decided to give us around 8 PER tail light SIDE. (Sedan tail lights are split in half. each half has 4 bolts. 16 bolts in all.)

Note: If you have a sedan, the 8mm deep socket will be needed. The tail lights' bolts are in a hollow area. The four corners of my sedan tails are where the bolts are.

2. Unplug the wires from the tail light. fairly easy

3. Pop off the tails with moderate force. Not too hard if you want to be careful, but if you try to pry it like it is worth $500000, it won't work.

4. Next comes the hard + annoying part. You must use the heat gun around the tail light CASING (the black casing). Heat the entire border. Go back and forth. Try your best not to stay in one spot...actually, avoid staying in one spot too long.

5. After the adhesive goo is melted, use the screw driver to basically pry the tail light plastic away from its casing. But like i said, be careful. I used a screw driver and forced my self unknowingly and accidently chipped a part of it. This is where for us noobs who don't have cash will enjoy. Like above, have a couple of chopsticks at your disposal. Work it the same way as a screw driver, but this way, your chopsticks would break rather the tails. Much safer IMO.

6. After working the heat gun for countless hours (i spent 1 hour. Literally.), separate the plastic tails from it's housing.

7. It should look something like this. Obviously, my sedan tails are different from coupes and hatches, but the idea is similar.

8. The black area on the housing is what is needed to be painted with the primer. I used blue tape just to be careful, but it's fairly easy to not spray...on something that is also silver..

Note: If you still see black, more than likely, it's the adhesive. heat gun it once more, get a screw driver and just rake them out. i later cleaned it and didn't snap a photo :(

9. Putting it back together is also a biiiiitch. Like my retarded ass for having fun with the heat gun, the black casing got a little melted here and there. BUUUT to my avail and the help of Coy and Jayson, RTV Sealant to the rescue. Just put a stream of the RTV where the adhesives were. Don't go RTV happy, but enough so water will not go through. to test mine, i got a bottle of water and sprinkled it here and there. Nothing went through so... :p

Horrible JDM on the left, USDM on the right.

10. Enjoy!

the inner tails are the modified one. the outside has yet to be modified. it's a big difference in person. a big horrible job. hahaha.

p.s. i literally only did 1 of 4 tails. span: 2 hours and (30 minutes of cleaning them up which i am not still not done). i still need to wax them and get the adhesive off of it. this was a first experience, so my other tails will hopefully come out much better.

haha yeah. just realized i coped everything wrong from flickr.

for those who plan to do this, please do a better job than i have done. i will be getting another set of 98 USDM tails from my family member, thus i did this. i still tried to be careful as possible because i will be using these for quite sometime still.
