Any HID retrofited car will need a relay, the ballast requre alot of current so they need the power sourced from the battery, so you need a relay to keep things in control, what kind of headligth youre doing this on USDM or JDM

Yes the bulb draws 35 watts of current but to get the light bulb started it requires alot of current, what the ballast does is comvert the cars DC power to AC power and boost the bulb at start up to get it warm so it starts making xenon gas and light ouput, if you dont conecct the ballasts directly to the battery and try to wire up with the headlights you will fry the wiring and cross the ballasts, so you need a relay to for it, but if yuo buying one of those rebased illlegal kits it already should come with a relay, retrofit you headlights for HID ill be worth it in the long run, putting HID's on a halogen housing is just plain stupid, lots of glare no cutoff line, no spectrum of colors an very illegal...
