so, i tensioned the belt as the chiltons manual says. rotate the crank 3 teeth then tighten tensioner. at 3 teeth the timing belt had good tenision (1-2mm back and forth) but then when i rotate back to tdc, the tension isnt as strong. is 3-5 mm side to side play acceptable? how much play should there be at tdc? thanks in advance for the help

Just make sure it's not all floppy lol. When I did it, it was completely tight. Just line up the marks, roll the engine completely over 6 times and then tighten your tensioner. :)

How much vibration? I think factory is 1/2 inch deflection... Didnt you look at it before you took it off? From the sound of it, the belt sounds if its not correct.

I'm sure 3-5mm is fine. The way I did it was loosen up the tensioner, rotate it counter-clockwise, and while I still had tension going counter clockwise I tightened the tensioner. Keeping it snug that way.
