Heat won't shut off...

I am having a problem with my 88 SE in which the air coming out of the vents is only hot and switching the lever has no effect on the temp. Is this a common problem with this year? It's not a big problem in the winter, but in summer it's bad...The lever seems to be connected by the feel of it, so I am thinking that there is some sort of flap that might be stuck open directing the hot air in. Any thoughts?

im not sure about the 1st gens, but try looking up under the glove box. there may be a cable that came off the hot/cold controller.
