headlight restoration...

hey guys just wanted to share my experience with headlight restoration. I used the 3m kit my grandfather had....

1. clean headlights with water/soap wipe with clean towel or paper towel.

2. dependent on the oxidation of your head light... you can start with a 500grit pad (which is the most coarse in the set), I started with the 800grit on the right side and 500 on a left.

3. use either pad (dry) going back and forth then wiping with a paper towel to see where I was at... after about 2-3 full passes or until desired amount is achieved.

4. (wipe clean again with paper towel) Now you will use the 1000grit pad, but this is a wet sanding step not dry sanding... apply small amount of water to the pad and a little along the light. Sand the light 2-3 passes untill a thick white oxidation appears.

5. (wipe clean with paper towel) Now do the same step above, but with a 3000grit pad.

6. Now starts the polishing steps. Put on the "purple" pad use a dollop of rubbing compound (forgot the name) go back and forth keeping the pad a little wet with the compound as u go until desired goals r achieved.

7. (wipe clean with paper towel) Now you with to the black polishing pad and use the polishing compound. Yet again go back and forth keeping pad slightly wet with the polishing compound as u global until desired goals r achieved.

here is what the final product looks like, could of used the 500grit on the right side as well, but didn't think it needed it...

you can piece this kit together yourself even if u don't have am air compressor.

all u need:
500grit sand paper
800grit sand paper
1000grit wet sand paper
3000grit wet sand paper
large dimpled polishing pad (more course "purple" pad)
soft polishing pad
rubbing compound
polishing compound

ENJOY!!!

Nice work. It looks brand new. Probably a lot easier to keep it clean with the one piece headlights too.

Nice! i've used the 3M kit and it turned out really well, and I just did another set and used the Mothers kit. it was a little easier and came out just as well, if not better. I love restoring headlights. haha makes me feel so good when they are shiny haha

Accel.speed

basically, i like fast!
I do this for my job haha. Except I dont sand it. I use a heavy rubbing compound on a foam drill attachment. Takes away most of the gunk. Followed by some wax and its pratically brand new. takes 10 minutes instead of an hour.

Rubbing compound is what I use on my headlights too. I'm tired of wasting it on the lights itself though. Dillon (dopematic) uses Mother's headlight cleaner on his and it's super clear. Looks brand new.

¡AY, CARAMBA!
you need to put some kind of sealant onthe headlights or they will turn that color again.
Yup! After clearing up the haze, use a headlight sealer. It will yellow again in a matter of time. Prolong that clearness using this or similar products.:
