Have a few questions

K. I got a boosted DB8 with a 01 Type-R motor fully built. Now, I recently got some head work done, this is the first time I am re-installing a head. I matched the pully up to TDC but there are 2 different types of TDC I am told, one where the 2 center cylinders are at the top most point and one more. Which do I need to use when I re-install the head and what should it look like? Pics would be a great help. Also, wanting to know about how I should install the cams, should both white marks be pointed straight up or how should they be pointed? Also, when I'm boosting, I was told even at a standstill I should be boosting if I do even a light rev (3-4k). Is that true? And also needing to know what are some likely sources of boost leaks? Any surefire ways (specific products) to prevent them? Thanx.... Any advice would be great, no dumb comments please. :D

I think I understood your questions... You shouldnt be boosting at a standstill your boost gauge should just go to 0 you shouldnt be making any boost. Who ever told you that you should make boost at a stand still shouldnt be listened to again, Only time you should make boost at a stand still would be 2 step but I dont think your there yet.

The timming marks on the Cam pullys (I think this is what your asking) The part that says up should be up and the lines should be pointed at each other.

Bring #1 cylinder to TDC, I use a coat hanger un-wound. Place it down the spark plug tube (with plug out of course lol), rotate crank and watch for the hanger to raise up. Keep turning crank til you see the hanger drop, once it drops turn crank backwards to raise it back up. That it TDC. Pull dizzy and check to see where the rotor button is aiming. If its not pointing to #1 on the cap, then rotate the cam gears, til both marks line up matching with rotor button pointing at #1. Stick a drill bit, or punch into the cam cap slot to keep the cams from rotating and slide the belt back on. If you don't the cam gears will want to move on you.

Guy_From_Nerk, how do you expect him to put a coat hanger in the spark plug hole with the head REMOVED? Lol.
(The spark plugs go in the head.)

There is a TDC mark on the oil pump that should line up with a mark on your crankshaft gear.
The #1 Cylinder would be the one on the passenger side, just line up the mark as I just said and you should be fine.

After the head is installed, line up the camshafts with the marks. (Lines on the cam gears point towards each other, there should be "UP" marks that obviously point up.)

Good luck.

Put the head on, bolt it down, then stick the coat hanger in there, set timing, put spark plugs in motor, smartass lol. You ever tried turning the crank with the spark plugs in the motor? Its a bitch, take them out and guess what, it rotates a whole lot easier. Not to mention what if he has his timing covers on? can't really see the mark on the oil pump then, can ya? My crank pulley didn't have the timing mark on it, and its not the first one I have seen not have it either. Either way will work, I just know from my 12 years of expierence with these cars, my way is easier for me

Why not rotate the crank while the head is off? It's even EASIER! Not to mention you can see when the pistons are at the top.
I was trying to point out he can't put a coat hanger in the spark plug hole with the had off, cause the spark plugs GO in the head lol. Anyways, how do you figure him to put the timing belt on with the timing cover on? I haven't seen a crank pulley with one either. It's on the gear..

With my six months or so of working on Honda's, I prefer the right way. ;)

Lmfao I love getting under Prozac's skin. I never said going by the timing marks was wrong, I just said there is other ways of doing it and the way I do it is the way I prefer to do it. Either way will work...p.s Wheres my fucking smoothie, I haven't forgotten

Your saying lining up the timing marks is the wrong way? LOL.
And please do explain how the hell you can fit a timing belt between the gear and the cover?

And yes I did, I didn't PUT it that way, I had a bad tensioner. :flipoff:

Edit:
Just throwing this out there, you should just accept YOUR way is not always the best way, and YOUR way may not always be the RIGHT way.
And you've been working on Honda's since you were... TWELVE? Lol. Or was that fourteen? I can't quite remember.

Kinda sad that you have twelve whole years of experience and little ol' me with only six months of experience working on Honda's knows a better way. :p
I'm just fucking with you, wouldn't want you to cry again and go on a mad post deleting spree.
We should just end this here lol.

Nope. I've changed plenty of timing belts and plenty of them had not bent the valves.
And you act like an AMC 304 in a Jeep is a hard engine to pull? It's not, one of the easiest out there. I own one FYI.

Yeah, make the video. Let me know when you post it up. Make sure you keep that lower timing cover on too bud.
I'll be waiting.

I never said a 304 in a jeep was something out of the ordinary, I am well aware of just how common they are, I was just using it as an example.

P.S cj5, cj7 or a tj?

"Pick your poison" kind of implied you thought it was something to be proud of..
Anyways, PM me or post up when you get that timing belt video made.

I'm going to go grocery shopping. I'm frickin' hungry lol.
