Son's Private Mechanic
Hey, If you read my previous thread about how my son's '90 Teg was killin' me. Here is the results of throwing money down a black hole.
The last thing I did was replace the O2 sensor, and it started ..... however, it didn't stay running for long but choked back down and could only idle with the throttle held wide open.
I broke down and took it to my mechanic, he looks at it a tells me, your timing is off 2 teeth (I know, you guys told me to check it!) However, It didn't have the cam belt covers so I did not have a good indication of where TDC really was.
I told him to order the covers, replace any leaking seals, reset the timing, which he did. He calls me and says "your catalytic converter is plugged"
So, come to find out, even though the car was running okay with the belt off 2 teeth, it was very rich (son complained about bad mileage) all that unburnt gas was firing up the cat which melted it down.
Minor detail, you need to get the air in for combustion, you also need to get the gasses out!!! This is why it would run, then choke out, set awhile then run, then choke...repeat as long as you have beer....
It seems I replaced a good : fuel pump, filter, distributor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PGM relay, calibrated injectors, untold hours under the hood, it was a $150 cat.....
Never an into this problem, or even heard of it.... so... word to the collective, check your cat first if it seems it is choking out !!
The up-side! frikkin' car should run for another 100K miles.....
