Engine tapping/slapping/knocking?

i drive a 92 integra with 237K mls. it has been pissing oil for a few months now. i replaced the spark plug tube seals and valve cover gasket and just recently the oil pan gasket. my mechanic friend (who replaced the OPG for me) told me that it is still leaking from the oil pump seal. recently, the motor started making a knocking/tapping sound in idle. what is this sound, and are these problems related? thanks!

Maybe your oil pump isn't working properly and you're knocking from oil starvation? Or bad rings maybe? Idk but it sounds like it's time for you to do a motor swap man. Don't dump any more cash into that engine the mileage is too high IMO.

it could be the valve's knocking. I askd my boss(who is a mechanic) that my stepdad can sometimes hear the valve's knocking in my car. my boss said if its really bad you'll hear the valve's knocking all the time. and its up to you if you want to do an engine swap, but I know acura's can last longer than 230k miles if its maintained well. you can also do a compression test

My engine had a clicking/knocking sound....had the valve's adjusted and the noise is gone (only cost $80 - well worth it). I hated that noise, cuz it made the car sound retarded!

Considering you say it's been pissing oil, I would look more into the possibility that it may have ran into a low oil pressure situation at some point and developed rod knock.

If you have a leak on your oil pump area, its probably the main seal,

As for the knocking sound, can you hear it from the top of the engine or the block itself?

i'd just say buy another b18a1. you can find them on craigslist for like 400 bucks. i wouldn't even deal with the hassle of the current motor you're using. i know it's a honda and it lasts "forever" but it just may be it's time.

ok, so i checked the compression and all the cylinders are at around 180psi, so the compression checks out OK. would the oil pump seal have something to do with this noise? i personally think it's the valve train, but i'm not sure. maybe it's because the car is just old as s***

A few people said it before but it's more than likely oil starvation and you could be developing a rod knock. Might be time for a motor swap.

so upon further inspection it looks like the top of the timing belt cover on the side closest to the valve cover is bent/cracked and making contact with the cam gears. i now suspect that this is the source of the sound. i just feel like it's too subtle of a sound to be rod knock/piston slap. do you guys think it would be ill advised to do a little surgery on the offending areas of the timing cover with a dremel and just cut off the parts that the cam gears are rubbing against?

ok cool. i'm off tomorrow morning, so i'll try to do that. i'll take pics and let you guys know what happens. hopefully this eliminates the annoying sound and my problem is only that simple...
