Engine light question

Hi all.

Great site you have set up, it is very helpful and useful.

I have a question about my 93 LS, with 212k miles:

The other day when I was driving on the highway and the check engine light came on, then the car kind of stalled out. As soon as I took it out of gear, the engine died. It will start and idle ok, but in higher rpm's it is running like crap and will die.

I attempted to pull the code from the ecu window, but when I turn the key on without starting the car, the check engine light in the dash is not on, and there is no light blinking at the ecu window. The check engine light is only on when the car is running.

Does anyone know what this means?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance,
Jon

I'm assuming you have an OBD0 computer and you checked your ECU LED light.
Drive the car around town and when you get the CEL, peep the ECU window sight hole. You should be getting a reading then

im sorry but that's incorrect ..dude has a 93 teg and i will agree with mirrorimg, jump the (2) pin connector located @ the right front lower kick panel. to determine the code, key on and count the blinking check engine light on the dash gauge cluster ..

Oh crap I didn't even see the part where he said the year. He said "no light blinking at the ecu window" so I assumed it was 91 and down.

Jump the wires and peep out the code when the CEL is on

Hi and thanks for the replies.
I did jump the little plug near the glove box while the engine was not running, and with the key in the on position, and still no blinks from the dash check engine light.
I did disconnect the battery just to be sure to eliminate any glitches, and this has no effect on my situation.

I am seeing the light in the dash on while the engine is running, but the light does not turn on or blink with the engine off and the key in the on position

Thanks again for the help!

I had the same thing happen a while back with my 93 GSR and I had to replace the ignition coil. Sounds like the spark is probably too week to keep up at high rpms, that was what was happening with mine. It was confusing because it has spark, I just couldn't tell it was somewhat lazy.

I did change the plugs and wires, it looks like that did the trick. Thanks for the advice.
I am still curious as to why my check engine light is on but not giving me any codes. I did unhook the battery to reset everything, once the car started back up the light came right back on.
