Distributor Cap ??? Electrical ??? Anyone ???

ill be driving my car once after 3500 or sometimes lower than that ithe rpm's go nuts and then after a lil bit the motor shuts off .... and its a bitch to turn back on ...
my friend was lookin at the car and think its electrical or either the distributor cap cuz the distrubutor runs eletrcisity to the rpm gauge ?? im i right or wrongt PLEASE HELP

forgot to mention if it helps the car is an automatic ... thanks guys sorry bout the double thread just tryin to fix this problem as fast as i can

check your coil & ignitor. also just to be safe check your t-belt and make sure no teeth sheered off or jumped a few teeth. thats the first thing I would check. Good Luck
