Dellums May Consider Legalizing Oakland Sideshows

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums would consider legalizing sideshows, or spontaneous gatherings that feature street racing and car stunts, in a designated area in order to cut down on injuries and deaths, according to his spokesman.

Dellums is interested in "how to solve the issue of endangering the community and endangering the youth in the community,'' spokesman Paul Rose said.

While the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum has come up in various discussions, Rose said the mayor has no specific plan, or location, in mind. "The mayor left it open, saying he's going to work with the police chief on the matter," he said.

New Police Chief Anthony Batts addressed the issue of sideshows at his swearing-in ceremony earlier this week. Shortly after being formally installed as chief, Batts said cracking down on late-night sideshow behavior would be an immediate priority.

Police spokesman Jeff Thomason said the department was stepping up patrols this weekend in response to the incidents.

"Friday and Saturday night, we're going to be out there," he said.

Batts and the department are "looking at different alternatives," and do not yet have a position on sanctioning the activities in certain areas, he said.

"However, the fact still remains that if people are going to break the law, then we're going to be there to enforce it," he said.

The idea of allowing sideshows in designated areas has come up at various times over the years, Oakland City Council President Jane Brunner said. In 2003, Councilwoman Desley Brooks proposed legalizing sideshows in designated areas, away from residential neighborhoods.

"My personal opinion is that it is extremely dangerous, people can get hurt and the liability can be terrific," Brunner said. "Where would you even do it?"

I thought this is what drag strips and race tracks were for.
i thought so too but Oakland Bay Area in California invented its own "culture" called the "hyphy movement" its their version of "crunk" which comes from the south, ie Georgia. Sideshows an inprompto car show where people in the old cars with big wheels go around doing doughnuts and figure 8's, smoke weed etc etc. They have been known to block off streets and freeways while doing this...I give up in humanity if this is actually legalized.............

Why is it that we get harassed if we have the 'wrong' kind of header or intake on our cars but these Donk fags can get flash mobs legalized? Shit, if imports did that crap in LA we'd all be in jail and our cars impounded for 30 days.

Wanna know why. In Oakland, the people really don't care. They get their cars impounded and just buy another one. Plus they are reckless. If you aren't from there and go to a sideshow, you'll probably get your car stomped out and or fucked with. The people don't care either if they go to jail, there are more people that'll keep it going. Even from other cities up here like Vallejo, Richmond, East Palo Alto and SF. Plus most of the cats that are into this slang anyways, so its not a big deal if a car is taken or whatever.

If you look at videos on Sideshows, you'll see the Oakland PD out in riot gear, but the crowds outnumber them like 3-1. That's the reason why if you wanna become a police officer, you'll see that you get paid like double to triple the amount vs other cities up here just because its so crazy.

Funny thing is the street races used to be the spot up there after the San Jose runs got smashed on.

Trust me, I totally agree with you on WTF.
