head gasket...probably less than 300 to do it cheaply i would yank the motor and have that shit resurfaced completly by a machine shop tho

thats a rip off for doing it on a honda, if you have some tools available and a tq wrench i would say try to do it yourself

Talk to buddies who have experience wrenching. Shops around here quote about a grand for a head gasket as well, but you can buy the actual gasket and supplies for a couple hundred bucks, so if you can make it happen in your driveway, it'll save you big time. Timing belts are the exact same story. $100 belt... 6 hours + of labour..

$1000 is mostly labor.

Pick up a Hayne/Chiltons manual for the car. (Or another kind of Honda manual.)
Make sure you have a torque wrench and some basic sockets and wrenches.

$100 - Head Gasket
$100 - Machine Work

There ya go. Do it all yourself it costs you a lot less.

Well think of it this way:

1.) A head gasket costs less then a whole engine. So it HAS to get done.

2.) Doing it yourself saves you $700.
Now that's a lot of money.

Between a manual and these forums, you'll have no problems.
