Complete A/c Overhaul

The summer is upon us and I have no A/C at all. I want to completely overhaul my A/C system and wonder if anyone has any pointers. Would you replace expansion valve? Would you replace the condenser, high side and low side lines. Obviously this is the old R-12 freon system, are the new compressor compatible with R134a? What do you suggest? What the ideal overhaul for A/C?

The compressor is compatible with r134, you just need to change a few fittings. I wouldn't replace the lines if they are ok, there's no point. Take it to a shop and see what they say.

There is no refrigerant in the system. I just checked the compressor and the clutch still engages. What's the best thing to do? Has anyone used the retrofit kit 38020-SM4-A1AH.

Maybe I will try this first instead of spending all that time and money on an overhaul. I was looking forward to the challenge but if I can achieve the same results through the kit, i just might take that chance. Has anyone used it

I haven't used that kit personally, there is a service bulletin out there for the retrofit.

not sure what comes with the kit either. seems like it just comes with the Hi/Lo side valves and some refigerant and possibly compressor oil.

at a minimum i suggest you change out the o-rings since the previous system had a leak. (hence why you dont have a/c currently lol)

some people also suggest removing the compressor to drain out the old oil that was used for the R-12 system. and also you would need to replace the receiver/drier, we should have one... im not 100% on this.

also maybe a system flush might be needed also. after all thats said and done a vacuum needs to be placed on the system, then you should be able to refill with the r-134a refigerant.

i haven't done it in a while so i might have missed a couple points.

How do you do a system flush? Can I do it or do I have to take it to a shop?

i use a flushing solvent in a tank that hooks to air. ive also used brake cleaner and compressed air but dont tell anybody.

I am going to replace the condenser in my 1990 Integra. Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket part? I usually stick with the dealer but their just entirely too high.

when they first talked about conversions they said you had to change everything, now you dont hear much about that. you do need to put the updated oil in the system, but honestly ive filled a empty r12 system with 134 and had it work.
