I have a 1991 acura ls special. When my car is on I cannot get it into any gears but when the car is off I get it into any of the gears! If I start the car or attempt to start the car while it is in gear and the clutch is pushed to the floor the will start but slowly move and when I let all the way off the clutch then it will move when I press the press the clutch to change from 1st to 2nd i cannot do it! What could be happening I have been trying to figure this out for a few weeks and now I really need some advice! I have a cable clutch system!

either it is out of adjustement (badly) or you need to replace the clutch because it is not engaging or just barely.

That is what I thought might be the case. I think I am going to try and get underneath it right now!

Check this fellas I haven't gone under the car yet because my boy is being a bitch! Here is another symptom I noticed by the way. If I start the car in gear I can drive it and then I have to time the engine and switch gears. I know the clutch is not bad because it is not slipping when I drive and get it into gear! What else should I look for as well?

If it will crank in gear with the clutch pedal not depressed then the clutch pedal safety switch could be bad. Does this year have a clutch cable or master and slave cyl?

I forgot to add that the second generation engines --if that is the class of a 91-- have a dash pot diaphragm which is located and mounted right on top of the throttle body linkage and a linkage from the dash pot goes to the throttle linkage. They found out years ago that on those engines that manual trans sync. was bad....they would grind into gears unless you barely revved the engine between each shift or like you learned how to do it. So, the came up with the dash pot and if you pay attention to all those older MT cars you will notice between each shift that the engine revs up just a little to make the trans sync. They also have the dashpot on older CRV'S. Make sure that the vacuum line goes from the dash pot to the rubber breather pipe and there is a small black valve spliced in between the dash pot and breather pipe. Hope I helped you in some way, FullCry

The clutch, pressure plate, release bearing and possibly flywheel may need replacing but it sounds like he may have other issues to. Sounds like you know just enough to have comebacks left and right.

My name matches again lol
This happened to me a month ago, and just got my car back 2 weeks ago.

Clutch. Replace it. I still need to look at the pic my friend tried to send me when he changed it for me. He said there was absolutely no life left.
