Quick question. I have a b18b1 and im confused about the timing marks. Do all 4 marks have to line up perfectly or do I only line up the 2 inner marks to the timing cover. I read somewhere online that I have to line all 4 cam marks I cant remember where I read it but for some reason it stuck in my head but anyways my haynes tells me just to line the 2 inner marks to the cover. Help asap cuz my cars been sitting for a while now.

Ok nevermind folks. I figured it out. But one more question. I dont have the upper timing cover. What else can I use as reference for lining up the 2 marks?

Crank has to be at cylinder 1 TDC (Top dead center)
That is the mark on the crank sprocket lining up with the timing cover.

The cams also have to be lined up. The "UP" arrows should be up and the two marks on the inside of the cams should line up.

The CRANK SPROCKET has a little tick mark and there is a tick mark on the BLOCK. wipe it all down and you'll see it easily. Honestly I just take my really long screw driver and tape the end and drop it in Cyl 1 and turn it over untill its at its very top most point. That is TDC

Here is a quick MS Paint drawing. This froze my computer somehow...
The method I described was the same method I used on my gsr also without any timing covers and it starts up every time.

LOL at the MS PAINT. Nicely done.

A couple of additions. There are outer marks on the cam gears. You should be able to form a straight line across all 4 marks when lined up. And make sure youre using the single TDC mark (I think its white) on the crank not the 3 timing marks, those are BTDC for setting timing.

Ah yes I forgot about the outer marks as well.
My crank pulley didn't have any marks on it sadly...so I had to use the sprocket.

is it ok if the 4 marks dont match PERFECTLY in a straight line? Can it just be close to a straight line. Cuz I been trying to line them but it never comes out perfectly straight.

Funny this is...I have Photoshop CS5 and still use paint 90% of the time xD

Every problem is solved with a visual example...made in paint.
