Boost or wait until Spring?

Hey guys,

Seeking opinions. I recently bought my first Honda, a GS-R with an uninstalled turbo. The engine is healthy and of course with the kit sitting in my garage I'm dying to go boost. I have never been turbo'd before but I keep having the urge to boost. This is my DD and in the northwest we get a ton of rain/snow/ice. Part of me is resisting going boost until the Spring where I will have more traction/control to get use to being boosted. The other part of me realizes that I have enough common sense not to roast my tires on wet pavement trying to smash into my turbo.

My set up would be 10 lbs on a Precision turbo. B18C1. Type-R tranny w/LSD.

I'm mainly just curious what your opinions are; boost now and just be careful or wait until Spring?

Thanks,

NWR.

Boost now. I think you will manage not spinning your tires every five seconds. I'm from the Northwest too, driving it in the rain sure is interesting compared to dry pavement. You get used to it fast though. I have yet to drive in the snow boosted, and I doubt I will even touch the car when it snows just because it's low.

Ye I won't be driving in the snow either. Thanks for your opinion, I appreciate it.

Boost when you feel you are comfortable doing it.

Sometimes its a quick install, other times its not.

if this is your DD, I would wait until you can pick up another car. Things tend to go wrong at first, it takes a little time to iron out the wrinkles. Lots of trips to the hardware store, and then youve gotta get it tuned.

research and make sure youve got absolutely everything you need (oil lines, tapped oil pan, couplers, correctly cut piping, chipped ecu, nuts and bolts.) and get it done right the first time. Get a basemap or get it towed to the tuner, and let it rip.

I appreciate that. I'm leaning more towards the Spring. All my research is done, I just need the tapped pan, piping couplers. The guy had basically everything. I already have a chipped ecu and had a shop take a look at the basemap and it's all good. Can't wait but I think it'll be better waiting for the Spring.

I was in your shoes a couple of months ago... Getting ready to boost my DD... I got all my parts and was ready to install. I use my car EVERY day so I choose a 2day weekend to bolt everything on and get it back on the road. Everything went relatively well besides tapping the oil pan being the only hassle. I didnt get my downpipe & dump tube fabricated for about a month so it was loud....

Dude I didnt have a tune for about 3months and drove Daily... I'd boost every now and then, but nothing major to kill the motor.

I finally got a tune 2weeks ago and the car runs like a effin CHAMP!!!!

BOTTOM LINE:
I'd say Boost it now if you want. If you love your car that much you'll be smart not to abuse "boosting" on wet pavement and stuff like that.

ps.
Im driving mine through the winter, Its the only car I've got

welp... there was my 2cents

I appreciate that. I feel I would take care of it, especially since it's my new baby, however I think I'm going to wait. I want to buy a few interior/exterior things before I boost.

I been dieing to boost for a year now, I bought a turbo kit to put on my old car, Had it about 80% put on, I had everything on but the oil lines. Than someone called me wanting to trade cars so i just asked what's all in it etc and it was a hella nicer car than mine. So i took off the turbo kit traded with him, Now i had this turbo kit sitting in my garage for months. If my car wasn't 10.5 compression it'd been boosted since i got it. I'm about to the point i'm about to buy some rods and pistons and boost it. Just dieing to boost

I was just about to say, why are you afraid of boosting a 10.5 compression motor? That thing will make power at lower levels of boost and spool quicker then a 9:1 compression setup. If I could do my motor over one of the things I would do is raise my compression on the pistons to 10:1. People boost stock type r's and those are 11:1...

To the OP, I would not trust my car on a basemap. A basemap is simply made to allow you to start the car and get it to a tuner, not to drive around for on months. I know someone else in here said they did it for 3 months with no issues, I can tell you that i've seen first hand what a basemap can do to a motor. No 2 motors are the same even if they are built the same, air fuels are always different. I would get a 2nd car before boosting, you never know whats gonna go wrong when modding a car so its nice to have a backup. Before you go boosting away you need to look at some other things that you'll need to upgrade:

Do you have the following:
Injectors that will support the power (stock 240s wont do the job)
What clutch do you have (again stock wont last very long)
What fuel pump do you have (starting to sound like a broken record, stock wont do the trick)
What power goals do you have in mind

Depends on where you are financially...the price of labor/gas/etc. may be higher, but with the government and economy where they're at, it may be risky to wait.
