Bad ignition timing.

I used the seach engine in hopes to find the answer to my problem, but I was unable to. So here it goes:

I just bought a 1991 integra ls. The folks I bought it from said they changed the timing belt, water pump, and distributor.

First off, the car idles high when first starting and fluctuates from 500-800 rpm AFTER accelerating. I changed fuel filter, cleaned throttle body, IACV, FITV, and air filter. Alas, same problem: crap acceleration and bad idle.

My current situation: I am UNABLE to adjust ignition timing to 16 degrees BTDC. I allowed the engine to warm to operating temperature, jumped the service check connector, then used a timing light to check ignition timing (I got the idle to stay around 750 rpm). I advance the distributor AS FAR AS IT CAN GO, but the ignition timing is still several degrees after TDC. I removed the #1 spark plug and with a pressure gauge, set #1 piston to TDC on compression stroke. Then I checked the rotor on the distributor and it is making contact with #1 plug wire(excuse my ignorance, I am somewhat new with this)., at least it appears to be making contact from the angle i can see it at. So it seems to me that if my TDC notch on the crank pulley points to the mark on the front end cover AND my distributor rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug, then My timing SHOULD be good, right?

So basically, timing slowly goes from, lets say, 40 degrees BTDC when first starting, then goes after TDC several degrees as the car warms up and reaches normal idle(well, as normal as I can get it).

I am totally stumped.Someone please give me a list of things I need to check BEFORE i visually inspect crank/cam sprocket alignment. I would GREATLY appreciate ANY help. Thanks.

Check timing on the cam shafts. If the intake can is off by as little as half a tooth it'll screw up everything. On my gsr the camshaft woodruff key channel was rounded out a tad and it knocked everything off...

I am extremely grateful for your responses. I agree with both of you. I do intend on looking at the timing, but I want to rule out everything else first before I take the time and effort to tear apart the front end. I mentioned before that when I position the #1 piston at TDC(compression stroke), the distributor rotor is pointing towards the #1 spark plug wire. If the intake cam was out of timing with crankshaft, wouldn't the distributor rotor be off as well?

So i took my valve cover off today just to peak at the cam gears(sprockets?) and to my untrained eyes, it does appear that the intake cam gear(sprocket? lol) is off by a tooth...maybe? I will take a picture and post it. I know im beating a dead horse on thie forum, but again, I am new to the mechanics of cars so I appreciate a little patience.

Its all good man. The intake cam being off by one tooth can cause issues like you have.

You're right it is a sprocket lol. Don't worry.

Looking for my next Teg..
pretty easy to tell if it is off 2 arrows should point at each other with the word "Up" with an arrow pointing 12 oclock on each cam gear :)

So yea...belt timing was most definitely off. I ended up breaking the harmonic balancer to get to the damn thing lol. Oh well. At least I know what the problem is. Also, i'm pretty confident i got the belt on right, but looking at the cam sprockets while eye level with the car, they both look like they're pointing more towards 1150 or 1155. but both inner and outer timing marks line up with the marks on the engine.

Yup. You were right. Intake cam sprockt off by a tooth. Reinstalled belt, aligned perfectly. Car runs like a champ. Kinda lol
