'93 Ls Auto?

I just bought a 93 LS and I'm wondering what the button on the Shifter is for?
My cousin thinks it's an Overdrive button, but I think it's an auto-gear shifter.
When I engage the button while in drive nothing happens.
So is it broken, or is it a automatic gear shifter?

You have to be in the 2/3 gear right below drive. It shifts from 2 to 3 (if I remember right).
